A Day in the Life… LabTrack

Every day millions of specimens are processed and tested in laboratories across the nation.  The volume of laboratory testing has grown consistently along with the complexity of the tests performed.   LabTrack adds visibility and protects the integrity of the specimen throughout the testing continuum.  At each point in the process, LabTrack  collects relevant information detailing where the specimen has been, who has handled it, how long it has been in any place and where it needs to go – all in real-time.

When it’s life or death, time matters.

Getting accurate test results in a timely fashion is one of the most important factors in helping physicians diagnose problems and treat patients. As a result, improving the efficiency and productivity of today’s laboratories has become critical as the complexity and volume of laboratory testing continues to grow.

Delays in test turnaround time (TAT), incorrect testing, misrouted, misplaced or lost laboratory specimens contribute to reduced productivity, increased costs and most importantly affect patient care.

LabTrack uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology to track diagnostic lab specimens from point to point. An RFID tag, containing both a very tiny microchip and an antenna, is attached to the sample at the collection point or in the laboratory. This can be incorporated into the specimen label to allow for a seamless process within the lab.

As the lab specimen moves from point to point in the laboratory process, data stored within the microchip waits to be read. The antenna receives a radio-frequency (RF) signal from an RFID reader and, in turn, sends a signal back. The reader picks up the signal and interprets it as meaningful data.

This kind of deep visibility into laboratory processes helps eliminate errors, drive accountability, and increase productivity for a more efficient and profitable laboratory environment.
